Protecting Yourself During Water Damage Cleanup: Essential Safety Tips

9/23/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage can occur suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving homeowners and business owners with a significant cleanup task. Whether it’s due to a burst pipe, flooding, or severe storm, addressing water damage quickly is crucial to prevent further damage to your property. However, safety should always be a top priority when dealing with water damage cleanup. Taking the proper precautions can help protect you and others from potential hazards.

In this blog, we’ll explore essential safety tips for protecting yourself during water damage cleanup and how SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas can assist with professional water damage restoration.

Assess the Situation Before Entering

Before you begin any cleanup efforts, it’s important to assess the extent of the water damage and identify any immediate safety risks. Entering a water-damaged area without evaluating the situation can expose you to hazards such as:

  • Electrical Risks: Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. If water has entered areas with electrical wiring or outlets, there is a risk of electric shock. Ensure that the electricity in the affected area is turned off before entering.
  • Structural Damage: Prolonged exposure to water can weaken the structure of your property, including floors, walls, and ceilings. Look for signs of structural damage, such as sagging ceilings or buckling floors, before walking through the area.
  • Contaminated Water: Depending on the source of the water, it may be contaminated with harmful bacteria, chemicals, or sewage. Never assume that standing water is clean—always take precautions to protect yourself from exposure.

Be Aware of Mold Growth

Mold can begin to grow within 24 to 48 hours of water exposure, making it a significant concern during water damage cleanup. Mold poses health risks and can spread quickly if not properly addressed. If you notice mold growth, avoid disturbing it, as this can release mold spores into the air.

Here’s how to protect yourself from mold during cleanup:

  • Wear a Respirator: As mentioned earlier, a respirator or mask with a particulate filter is essential when working in areas with mold.
  • Isolate the Area: If possible, isolate the moldy area to prevent the spread of spores to other parts of your home or business.
  • Call a Professional: Mold removal should be handled by professionals, like the experts at SERVPRO®, to ensure proper remediation. SERVPRO’s team is equipped to safely remove mold and prevent further growth.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

Water damage often leads to increased humidity levels, which can create an environment conducive to mold growth and musty odors. Proper ventilation is crucial to help reduce moisture and improve air quality during cleanup. Here are a few tips to ensure adequate ventilation:

  • Open Windows and Doors: If weather permits, open windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the affected area.
  • Use Fans and Dehumidifiers: Fans and dehumidifiers can help speed up the drying process by removing excess moisture from the air.

Know When to Call Professionals

While DIY cleanup efforts may be appropriate for minor water damage, significant water damage situations require professional assistance. SERVPRO specializes in water damage restoration and has the experience, equipment, and expertise to handle even the most severe cases.

Preventing Basement Flooding in Storm-Prone Areas

5/15/2024 (Permalink)

As storm season approaches, homeowners in storm-prone areas brace themselves for potential flooding, especially in vulnerable areas like basements. Basement flooding can lead to costly damages and major headaches, but with proactive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of water intrusion. At SERVPRO®, we understand the importance of safeguarding your property, which is why we're here to share some essential tips for preventing basement flooding in storm-prone regions.

  • Maintain Your Gutters and Downspouts: Properly functioning gutters and downspouts are your first line of defense against basement flooding. Make sure they are clear of debris, such as leaves and twigs, to allow water to flow freely away from your home's foundation.
  • Direct Water Away from Your Home: Ensure that the grading around your home slopes away from the foundation. This helps divert rainwater and storm runoff away from your basement. Additionally, consider installing downspout extensions to carry water farther from your home's foundation.
  • Seal Foundation Cracks: Inspect your basement walls and foundation for any cracks or gaps where water could seep in. Seal these areas with waterproofing sealant or epoxy to prevent water intrusion during heavy storms.
  • Install a Sump Pump: A sump pump is a valuable investment for storm-prone areas. It collects excess water from the sump pit and pumps it away from your home, preventing water buildup in the basement. Ensure your sump pump is in good working condition and consider installing a backup battery-powered pump for added protection during power outages.
  • Invest in Basement Waterproofing: Consider professional basement waterproofing services to fortify your basement against potential flooding. This may include installing a waterproof membrane, interior drainage system, or exterior waterproofing barrier to keep water out.
  • Inspect and Maintain Plumbing Systems: Leaky pipes and plumbing fixtures can contribute to basement flooding. Inspect your plumbing regularly for any signs of leaks or water damage, and promptly repair any issues to prevent them from worsening during storms.
  • Elevate Vulnerable Items: Store valuable items and important documents in waterproof containers and elevate them off the basement floor. This can help protect your belongings in the event of minor flooding.

By implementing these proactive measures, you can minimize the risk of basement flooding and protect your home and belongings from water damage during storm season. However, if despite your best efforts, your basement does experience flooding, don't hesitate to contact SERVPRO for professional water damage restoration services. Our trained technicians are available 24/7 to help you get your home back to pre-flood condition swiftly and efficiently.

Stay dry, stay safe, and stay prepared this storm season with SERVPRO by your side.

Choosing the Right Restoration Company for Your Water Mitigation Needs

2/5/2024 (Permalink)

SERVPRO van in front of a sunset. A reliable restoration company should offer 24/7 emergency services and be readily available to respond to your needs swiftly.

Choosing the right restoration company after experiencing water damage is a crucial decision. Whether facing water damage, fire, mold, or other disasters, entrusting your property's restoration to a reputable and competent company is not easy. Here's a practical guide on how to pick the best restoration company tailored to your specific needs:

1. Assess Their Expertise

Begin by evaluating the company's expertise and experience in handling your specific type of restoration. Inquire about their background, certifications, and specialized training. A competent and trusted restoration company should have a proven track record in dealing with similar situations and possess the necessary certifications and licenses.

2. Availability and Responsiveness

In emergencies, promptness is crucial. Assess the company's availability and responsiveness. A reliable restoration company should offer 24/7 emergency services and be readily available to respond to your needs swiftly.

3. Reputation and Reviews

Research the company's reputation and read reviews from previous clients. Online platforms and review sites such as Google and Yelp often provide insights into customer experiences. Pay attention to testimonials regarding their professionalism, reliability, and the quality of their work.

4. Insurance Knowledge

A trusted restoration company should have a comprehensive understanding of the insurance process. They should be adept at working with insurance companies, helping you navigate the claims process smoothly. Ask if they can assist with documentation and communication with your insurance provider.

5. Equipment and Techniques

Inquire about the equipment and techniques the company utilizes for restoration. Ensure they employ modern, state-of-the-art equipment and follow industry-standard restoration techniques. A company using advanced technology is more likely to provide efficient and effective restoration services.

6. Transparency and Communication

Clear communication is key to a successful restoration process. Choose a company that maintains transparency in their services, pricing, and timelines. They should keep you informed at every stage of the restoration and be willing to address any concerns or queries you may have.

7. Local Presence

Preferentially choose a restoration company with a local presence or office in your area. Local companies often have a better understanding of regional challenges, regulations, and can respond more quickly to emergencies.

8. Personalized Assessment

A reputable restoration company should conduct a personalized assessment of your property's damage before providing a restoration plan. Avoid companies that offer quotes without inspecting the damage firsthand.

9. Guarantee or Warranty

Inquire if the company offers any guarantee or warranty for their services. A company confident in its work should provide assurances of the quality and durability of its restoration.

By considering these essential factors when selecting a restoration company, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your specific restoration needs. Remember, thorough research and due diligence in choosing the right team can make a significant difference in the success of your property's restoration process.

Emergency Ready Plan (ERP) Q&A Residential

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when trying to prep your family and home for a disaster.

Q1: What are the most common natural disasters that can occur in my city?

A1: Here in the Las Vegas area, we can expect to see flash floods, fires during summer months and perhaps an earthquake.

Q2: What are some of the first actions we should take during a particular disaster or accident?

A2: For a flash flood, one of the first actions that should be taken is to turn off all utilities and electrical devices. Shut off the electricity. Make sure not to tamper with electric equipment if you are wet or standing in water. Then move any important belongings to higher ground. For forest fires and earthquakes, it is very important to shut off the gas line immediately and pay close attention to authorities.

Q3: How do I ensure that these steps can be taken quickly and safely?

A3: When setting up your ERP, it is important to survey the home and locate the different key shut off locations for electric power, gas and water. It can be helpful to color coordinate the water with blue paint, the electric with yellow paint, and the gas shut off with red paint. That way it is highly visible and easy to remember for all family members. It is also helpful to take pictures of each shut off location around the home with a short description on how to turn off that utility. Having an organized set up with pictures and keys for each utility shut off can help reduce the chance of further damage and bodily injury in these scenarios.

These are a few tips that may be helpful for your family in case of an emergency. There is always more to learn about preparing for natural disasters but an ERP is a good place to start. If you are a SERVPRO customer, feel free to ask us about helping you set up an ERP at your home.

IICRC water damage categories

10/10/2020 (Permalink)

Since we are an IICRC Certified Firm we follow their guidelines when determining category of water damage that occurs in a structure.

There are 3 Basic Categories of Water

Category 1 originates from a sanitary source and poses no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. Examples may be water from an broken angle stop under a sink.  However, it may not always remain clean after it comes into contact with other surfaces or materials that contain contaminants.

Category 2 contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort and/or sickness if contacted by humans. This category may contain potentially unsafe levels of micro-organisms or nutrients for micro-organisms, and other organic or inorganic matter.

Category 3 is grossly contaminated and may contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances.

Water damage cleanup during the COVID-19 pandemic

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

With the COVID-19 pandemic our society has started practicing social distancing as a way to spread the virus to each other and especially those in the high risk category.

SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has 17 plus years dealing with jobs that involve the inherent risk of potential harmful viruses and contaminants.  We have always provided PPE (personal protection equipment) to our employees during these jobs for their protection.

Now with the practice of social distancing we use the same PPE to not only ensure the safety of our workers but also the safety of you and those that occupy your home.  Our crew members wear N-95 dust masks or respirators and gloves from the moment they arrive at your residence.

All of our job site equipment is decontaminated after it leaves a residence and stored at the warehouse.  We also wipe down that same equipment before placing at newly flooded homes.

With these protocols we are doing everything possible to make sure you and your family are safe during your water damage cleanup.

In most water damages involving multiply units it’s the upstairs unit that isn’t always the safest which can, in most cases, cause a lot of damage in the unit(s) below. While the upstairs is thinking nothing is wrong, gravity takes its course and the lower units face the aftermath. SERVPRO has been in the water cleanup and restoration industry for over 50 years and SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has been in Las Vegas for over 15. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas sees these situations time and time again. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas will work with you and your insurance company to make sure your unit/dwelling gets back to the way it was before.

This photo shows our air mover and dehumidifier on a water loss.

Las Vegas has some interesting water. We actually have such hard water then over a less period of time this hard water can corrode pipes, angle stops, water heaters and valves we use on a daily.  When pipes get corroded they burst causing sometimes massive amounts of water. This is one of our air movers we use, with a dehumidifier, to help with the dry down.  It is very important to have the right equipment and most important to know how to use it. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas has the skill and ability to handle any kind of loss and any size.  With proper dry down from trained professionals we can stop secondary damages and more importantly get your place back to where it was before.

This photo shows the containment set up around the most effected area.

In some cases we can save areas from being demoed. This can be done if the homeowner calls us the day they find the loss and if we are working with a clean water source.  The homeowner in this situation worked all day and got home to a huge amount of water.  Rather than waiting for the next day he called SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas and we came out that same night and started the cleanup process. In the photo it shows a containment used to save multiple areas from being demoed.  With the containment we were able to focus on the most wet areas. Because we got out on site fast and because of the experience of our crew we were able to save a lot of money and time for the project because we didn't need a contractor to come in and rebuild.
