What to Do If You Experience Electrical Fires in Your Home
12/11/2024 (Permalink)
Knowing what to do if an electrical fire breaks out in your home can help minimize damage and keep everyone safe.
Electrical fires are a serious hazard and can happen without warning. Each year in the U.S., electrical failures or malfunctions cause around 51,000 fires, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). Knowing what to do if an electrical fire breaks out in your home can help minimize damage and keep everyone safe. Our team is here to provide some key tips on handling an electrical fire.
Signs of an Electrical Fire
First, it's important to recognize the signs of an electrical fire. Common indicators include:
- Sparks or strange popping noises from outlets or appliances
- A burning smell, especially a plastic-like odor
- Smoke or heat coming from outlets, cords, or appliances
- Flickering lights, even after changing the bulb
If you notice any of these, it's time to take action.
Step 1: Cut the Power
The first thing you should do is cut the power—if it’s safe to do so. Electrical fires are fueled by live electricity, so turning off the power can help stop the fire from spreading.
- Locate your breaker box: Know where your home's main circuit breaker is.
- Turn off the power: If you can, shut off the specific circuit where the fire started, or turn off the main breaker to cut power to the whole house.
Step 2: Use the Right Fire Extinguisher
Electrical fires are Class C fires, meaning they require a fire extinguisher designed for electrical equipment. Never use water to try to put out an electrical fire, as it can cause electrocution.
- Have a Class C fire extinguisher on hand: Keep one in areas like the kitchen or near high-traffic areas.
- Aim at the source: Use the extinguisher to target the base of the flames if the fire is small and manageable.
Step 3: Evacuate and Call 911
If the fire is spreading or you can't safely cut the power, your priority is to get everyone out of the house.
- Evacuate immediately: Don’t wait to see if the fire gets worse—smoke and flames can spread fast.
- Call emergency services: Once you're safely outside, call 911 to report the fire.
Step 4: Notify Your Utility Company
Once the fire is out, contact your local utility company. They may need to inspect your home’s electrical system before the power can be safely restored.
How to Prevent Electrical Fires
Prevention is always better than dealing with the aftermath. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of electrical fires in your home:
- Inspect your wiring: Have an electrician check your home's wiring, especially in older homes.
- Avoid overloading outlets: Plugging too many devices into a single outlet can cause overheating.
- Use high-quality power strips: Avoid cheap power strips, and never chain them together.
- Watch for warning signs: If you notice frequent circuit breaker trips, flickering lights, or a burning smell, call an electrician immediately.
Electrical fires can be dangerous, but knowing what to do can make all the difference. If an electrical fire breaks out, remember to cut the power if possible, use the right fire extinguisher, evacuate, and call for help. After the fire is out, SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas can help restore your home and get everything back to normal.
What is a Fire Break?

If you need help with fire damage restoration or have questions about fire safety, contact SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas.
Wildfires can cause extensive damage, especially in dry and windy places like Las Vegas, NV. One effective way to prevent the spread of wildfires is by using fire breaks. But what exactly is a fire break, and how does it help control wildfires? This blog will explain what fire breaks are, why they are important, and how they are used.
What is a Fire Break?
A fire break, also known as a fire line or fireguard, is a gap in vegetation or other combustible material that acts as a barrier to slow or stop a wildfire. Fire breaks can be natural or man-made and are strategically placed to control the spread of fire.
Why Are Fire Breaks Important?
The main purpose of a fire break is to provide firefighters with a safer area from which to fight a fire. It also helps to limit the fire's ability to spread, protecting homes, properties, and natural resources.
Types of Fire Breaks
There are different types of fire breaks, each serving the same purpose but created in different ways.
Natural Fire Breaks
Natural fire breaks use existing landscape features that do not support the spread of fire. Examples include rivers, lakes, wetlands, and rocky terrain. These natural features can be very effective in stopping or slowing a fire.
Man-Made Fire Breaks
Man-made fire breaks are constructed by removing vegetation and other combustible materials to create a clear strip of land. These can include roads, trails, or specially cleared areas around properties.
How to Create a Fire Break
Creating a fire break involves careful planning and regular maintenance to ensure effectiveness.
Planning
First, identify high-risk areas and plan where the fire break will be most effective. Consider the terrain, prevailing winds, and the location of valuable assets such as homes and infrastructure.
Clearing Vegetation
Remove trees, brush, grass, and other combustible materials from the area where you plan to create the fire break. This clear strip of land will help stop the fire from spreading.
Maintaining the Fire Break
Regularly clear the fire break of any new vegetation growth to ensure it remains effective. This is an ongoing process that requires regular attention.
Controlled Burns
In some cases, controlled burns (also known as prescribed burns) are used to create fire breaks. This involves deliberately setting controlled fires to burn away vegetation in a designated area. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, controlled burns are a crucial tool in wildfire management and can significantly reduce the fuel available for wildfires.
Benefits of Fire Breaks
Fire breaks offer multiple benefits, making them a vital part of wildfire management.
Protecting Homes and Properties
For homeowners in Las Vegas, NV, creating fire breaks around their properties can be a critical measure in protecting their homes from wildfires. This is especially important in areas near wildlands where the risk of fire is higher.
Helping Firefighters
Fire breaks provide firefighters with safer and more effective positions to battle wildfires. By slowing the fire's progress, fire breaks give firefighters the opportunity to control and extinguish the fire more efficiently.
Saving Natural Resources
Fire breaks help protect forests, wildlife habitats, and other natural resources from being destroyed by wildfires. By containing the fire, these breaks help preserve the ecological balance and biodiversity of the area.
Final Thoughts
Fire breaks are a vital tool in managing wildfires. For residents of Las Vegas, NV, understanding and using fire breaks can be a crucial part of wildfire preparedness. Whether using natural features or creating man-made breaks, these barriers can protect homes, support firefighting efforts, and save natural resources. - Does your family have a home fire escape plan?

Smoke and soot facts:

- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas gets asked multiple questions daily about whether or not to file a claim. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas does not have the power to act like an adjuster nor do we answer questions that should be answered by a licensed adjuster. We can however give a ball park figure in regards to a fire loss damage which could help you determine if it's worth filing a claim or not. I would say the most asked question in regards to ANY type of loss when it comes from a connected neighbor is "should I still file a claim?" I always recommend filing a claim because in most cases these types of losses will include the HOA and can take a long period of time to figure out who's responsible for what (they have to read through the CC&R's) which could take weeks. If both parties file a claim then in most cases each insurance will cover its own and determine who's at fault behind curtains and subrogate against the at fault party.

Ways to prevent home fires during the summer
6/29/2020 (Permalink)
We here at SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas deal with many house fires throughout the year, they are the most common disaster throughout the U.S and with the summer rolling in, here are some ways you can help prevent these:
#1. Don’t use fireworks at home
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, it’s always best to leave fireworks to the professionals and attend public fireworks displays instead.
#2. Be careful when grilling outdoors
Practice safe grilling this summer with these grilling fire tips:
• Always use your grill outdoors and far away from any structures.
• Clean your grill after every use to prevent a buildup of fat or grease that can cause a grease fire.
• Stabilize the grill on a flat surface to prevent it from tipping.
• Watch for gas leaks.
• Use charcoal starter fluid carefully. Don’t add starter fluid to the fire if it starts to go down.
• Have baking soda, a bucket of sand, or a fire extinguisher handy if you need to put out the fire. Never add water to a grease fire.
#3. Beware of lawn mower fires
You may use your mower with no signs of trouble then put it away in your garage without realizing the potential danger. If the fuel flowers from the tank into the engine while the engine is turned off, it will eventually cause a buildup of flammable vapors and a heat source can spark a fire in your garage. To reduce this risk, replace your fuel line every other year, inspect your carburetor for damage, and add fuel stabilizer every fill up.
#4. Have your air conditioner inspected
Regular maintenance and tune-ups of your heating and cooling systems can help prevent a fire.
#5. Reduce your risk of a kitchen fire
Throughout the year, kitchen fires are responsible for most home fires. The stovetop is the usual starting point for kitchen fires, not the oven. To reduce your risk of a fire, always remain in the kitchen when grilling, frying, or cooking on your stovetop. Make sure there are no flammable materials near the heat such as a paper towel dispenser or dish towel. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen but not too close to the stove and oven in case of fire and remember to suffocate cooking flames with a lid, not water.
#6. Check your dryer
Most dryer fires are the result of failing to clean the dryer vent ductwork as highly flammable lint will build up over time and may be ignited by the heat of the dryer. Clean your lint trap between every load and clean your dryer vent at least once a year with a special vent cleaning brush. Make sure the outside dryer exhaust vent allows hot air to escape.
#8. Make sure your smoke detectors work
You should have at least one smoke detector on every floor of your house in an area where it can be heard from every room of the house. Inspect your smoke detectors regularly to make sure they work and develop an escape plan that your entire household can practice in case of emergency. The escape route should have two possible exits from every room and these paths should be as free of clutter as possible.

SERVPRO has been a leader in the Las Vegas area for over 18 years mainly because we do have access to these trainings which allow us to handle any type of fire damage. One of the many things which are confusing in a fire damage is what to do with the drywall. A trick that SERVPRO uses, and as shown in the photo, is looking out for nails. In the photo you can see where the nails are located in the drywall. SERVPRO knows and understands when this happens it means the drywall needs to be removed in that area. If the drywall does not show nails then SERVPRO will try to clean and save the wall if possible. If after the cleaning the walls smells heavily of smoke then SERVPRO will request removal. But to be safe and insure the job is done right it is always best to contact SERVPRO and allow the professionals to handle the situation

In this scenario a fire damage was caused by old faulty wiring. After many years of hidden water damage rust began to build and over time and with the right amount of heat finally a spark began which then turned a loving home into a burning nightmare. SERVPRO was able to enter the property and decipher between the salvageable and non-salvageable items. Salvageable items include hard covered items like chairs, countertops, tile, and other non-pours materials. Some non-salvageable items include couches, pillows, mattresses and other fabricated items. The homeowner was very pleased to know that some of the family’s items were able to be saved. Because of the trainings SERVPRO was able to educate the homeowner and the homeowner was happy that not everything was a total loss.

Outcome of a thermostat after a fire damage
SERVPRO has about seen it all when it comes to fire losses here in Las Vegas, in this photo is shown how hot a property can be when a fire engulfs your home. The fire was located about 4 rooms away but it the heat was so extreme that this was the outcome of a once perfectly working thermostat. The fire loss was caused by a bad electrical connection which SERVPRO has seen before, especially in older homes. The homeowner did the right thing by calling for help and leaving far away from the property. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas was called to do the cleanup in preparation for the build back. SERVPRO was able to remove non-salvageable items and materials from the property. Some items were taken back to our warehouse for cleaning also the homeowner was updated almost daily with what was going on. The homeowner enjoyed the ease of the process and was pleased with the communication that took place.

Fire Damage cleanup
If a fire hits your house it’s always best to know who to contact. While the work is going on it is not advised to be entering in and out of the home because the structure can sometimes not be safe. Also, the smoke can cause headaches and older homes might even have asbestos contained materials, which you do not want to consume. SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas knows about these dangers and has trained experienced technicians, production managers and crew chiefs to handle these circumstances. With a company that has been in the industry for over 50 years it’s not hard to know who to call.
In this photo it shows soot on the wall of a fire damaged home. One face mural remained attached to the wall but the other fell showing the change of color on the wall.

Fire Damage, should I file a claim if the fire started at my neighbors?
1/2/2018 (Permalink)

James Cleaning up a smoke damaged property in Las Vegas
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Southwest Las Vegas will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.
In the Photo James is dressed in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). He is using SERVPRO's approved chemical mixture to clean Dry Smoke from a commercial property effected by an electrical fire.
